The Media FX Group is proud to have re-launched the Legion Legacies website, just in time for Remembrance Day - November 11, 2009: www.legionlegacies.org This community website's goals are to provide a portal for children to learn their 20th century Canadian military history and post stories of veterans who have fought for our freedom.
Too many veterans go unrecognized for their contribution to our quality of life. Too many people gloss over the dramatic events the shaped our nation. This website personalizes the individual contributions our veterans have made. The stories are vetted by The Royal Canadian Legion, not by government bureaucrats, so everyone can post. The stories do not necessarily have to be specifically about Canadian veterans either. Many people, whether they be women in factories, the merchant marine, or loved ones back home who supported the missions our brave soldiers endured, have amazing stories yet to be told. This is the venue.
What is truly significant about this website is the utility. In one central location you can read about our Canadian military background, you can contribute, and you can communicate to friends, family and the veterans themselves. As a learning experience for Canadian youth, there is no other online community like it.
Students K-12 (primary users of the website) can post stories, yes, but now they can supplement the stories with audio and video. You can upload your own video, or you can search though YouTube videos and post them within your story on the Legion Legacies website. The website takes advantage of new web 2.0 technologies to share our history with each other too. When you post a story on this website and tag it with keywords, the search feature becomes a much more powerful tool. See who fought with along side your veteran and read about their contributions too! Then select the Facebook icon and share your post with all your friends and family.
For teachers of Social Studies, this website provides for a plethora of activities that hit home why we celebrate Remembrance Day. The stories remain posted for others to read, watch, and remember. And the legacy lives on.
